Manufacturing Manager | MA

This opening is at the corporate headquarters of Velasa Sports (d.b.a. Sparx Hockey).  Velasa Sports was founded to solve the biggest unmet need in ice hockey and other skating sports - maintaining sharp skates.  Our product, Sparx, is a highly accurate, easy to use, and safe skate sharpener for the home.  Due to its accuracy and speed, Sparx is now being used by several professional hockey teams as well as retail sports store locations throughout North America.


Reporting to the CEO, the Manufacturing Manager coordinates manufacturing, supply chain, and distribution activities across multiple sites.  This position ensures that Velasa products are manufactured at appropriate volumes to the highest quality standards.  This individual must work collaboratively with internal teams from Engineering, Quality, Marketing, and Sales.

  • Forecasting
    • Work with Sales, Marketing, and management to integrate historical and forecasted sales activity in production planning.
    • Develop and maintain production forecasts.
  • Production / Manufacturing
    • Working closely with Engineering, apply manufacturing and quality knowledge and experience to develop production processes..
    • Supervise domestic production activities including management of production personnel.
    • Ensure all processes are performed in conformance to Velasa standards.
    • Plan and execute projects to enhance profitability, productivity, and efficiency at manufacturing sites.
  • Vendor Management
    • Working from production forecasts, manage purchase orders for raw materials and finished assemblies from suppliers.
    • Perform periodic contract manufacturer and vendor audits and assessments.
    • Routinely negotiate for highest quality and lowest price with vendors – ensuring the best possible components and assemblies.
  • Inventory Management
    • Manage supply chain activities for domestic and international operations.
    • Develop inventory control methods and integrate software products with company’s ecommerce solution.
    • Document processes and train other departments and personnel to interface with inventory control software.
  • Warehouse Management
    • Manage warehouse personnel and activities associated with movement of goods in facility.
  • Shipping/Logistics
    • Coordinate shipments into and out of corporate headquarters.
    • Manage international 3PLs to deliver Sparx Hockey products to customers.
    • Perform routine audits for all shipping and logistics activities to ensure best possible service and price for customers and company.
  • General
    • Provide guidance and direction to subordinates, including setting performance standards and monitoring performance.
    • Enforce compliance by all operations personnel of administrative policies, manufacturing procedures, and safety rules.
    • Make decisions in a timely manner, sometimes with incomplete information and under tight deadlines.
    • Demonstrate sensitivity and ability to communicate knowledge using different forms of communication while accounting for cultural style.



  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Self-motivated and driven.
  • BA/BS degree or equivalent (Technical degree preferred).
  • Ability to read and interpret detailed CAD drawings.
  • Understanding of critical to function dimensioning schemes and inspection methods.
  • Expert proficiency with spreadsheets and managing large data sets.
  • Experience with contract manufacturing in a high-volume environment, preferably with hardware products and consumer electronics.
  • Broad experience across a variety of mechanical assembly processes.  Familiarity with PCBA, molding, extruding, etc.
  • A comprehensive understanding of lean and other world class manufacturing principles such a Six Sigma, SPC, DFM, FMEA, and root-cause problem solving.
  • Proven track record of driving continuous improvement in manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of and experience with statistical process control concepts.
  • Strong understanding of project management and planning techniques.
  • Domestic and international travel required up to 10% (But could be more in critical phases).
